20" t. early nineteenth century, carved wooden creche (religious) figure of an elderly woman with exquisite detail to her features, glass eyes, deeply carved, grey hair, center-parted and pulled gently away from her face into a loose bun at the back and carved tendrils around her shoulders, large carved hands with great detail to fingers, nails (one pinkie finger broken) and beautifully carved feet wearing open sandals (arms extend to elbows and legs extend to the knee where they are attached to the hemp covered body). She gazes slightly upward and has her head held back, one arm bent across her chest and holding a wonderfully made, old basket with lid, the other arm in front as if shielding the basket, wears old green and salmon silk gown with shawl. Could be mounted on a stand as there are two wooden prongs at the base. Some paint wear but generally excellent condition. Rare size.
