SUPER RARE, c.1881, wooden jointed at shoulders and hips "Witch or Wizard" doll as pictured and described in Merrill's book*, page 18. 9 3/4" tall, "this rare oriental character doll by Mason & Taylor differs greatly from other dolls by this concern. The rather crudely painted head is of molded composition over a wooden core and a toggle arrangement in the neck allows for an imaginary decapitation. Witch or Wizard dolls were factory dressed in printed cotton kimonos." Our doll is wearing her original kimono and is in excellent condition except that the head paint is nearly all gone. This could easily be redone as I have photos of her original facial paint. She also has the painted blue shoes with upturned toes and stockings. * "The Art of Dolls"-Merrill.
