16" tall, very early, straw-filled, signed: Ideal in a diamond, c.1929, teddy-type doll with hard composition head having sleep tin eyes, closed mouth with two painted teeth, painted lashes and brows and excellent coloring. Very similar to "Peter Pan" by Ideal (same time frame) and shown on page 282, 14th Blue Book-Foulke. His hard, straw-stuffed body has swivel joints at the shoulders and hips (just like Ideal's teddy bears of the same era) with mitt-type felt hands with separate thumbs and shaped, off-white, felt-covered feet. His head is covered by a grey velveteen hood that exactly matches his body and he wears a matching, off-white collar and grey leather belt. Probably made to represent Rear Admiral Rob't. Peary's daughter, Marie Peary (Stafford), born at the North Pole and called the "snow baby" by the Greenland natives. This is the same time frame that the first teddy bears were being marketed. He/she is in very good overall condition except for needing a little repair to the palm of each hand where the straw is showing thru. RARE doll with some interesting history and connections to both the snow babies and early teddy bears. Makes a wonderful addition to any doll collection. We have printed a little of the history material to go with your purchase.
